what is nicola, a foreword by Alois Bertona

Nicola wasn’t born an artist, nor does he defines himself as one.

Without delving into questions about what art is, who qualifies as an artist, or the proper definitions of these terms in our times, we can certainly agree that a five-year cycle of daily artistic production, his yellow canvases or the layered danshoku, encapsulating Nicola’s essence, reflections, feelings, and life, all come very close to these concepts.

Nicola doesn’t paint only with traditional artistic tools: his canvases are made of pixels, his medium is a graphic tablet, and his brush both leaves no marks and stains. Yet, for the last years, Nicola has shared himself through drawing: recalling moments, reflections, events, and thoughts. It’s a continuous relationship between a physical world and a potential one projected from his mind. The cycles are not just a recounting of events, but their projection through Nicola’s inner world.

Continuous loops of experiences, reworked and shaped by his mind, become a new reality, a new world.
